BAF
Scholarship Services
The Beckley Area Foundation provides oversight for approximately 50 scholarship
Funds. We provide certificates to be presented to scholarship recipients; explanations for each recipient naming the donor
and describing how the money is awarded, notification to donors as to who received the scholarships, etc. All money is distributed
directly to the business office of the appropriate college or university to be applied to the recipient's account. In the
event that a student withdraws before the funds are used, BAF makes arrangements to "recapture" the available dollars.
BAF does not select any scholarship recipients. Scholarship selection committees
at area high schools, school board offices, and the financial aid offices of designated colleges and universities are responsible
for selecting student recipients. Contact area high school guidance offices and college financial aid offices for information
and application forms for all scholarships awarded from BAF funds. We have endowments providing scholarships for students
attending The College of West Virginia, Concord College, Marshall University, WVU School of Engineering, T.C. Williams School
of Law, Queens College, University of Richmond, Empire College School of Law, Furman University, Duke University School of
Law, Marshall University, and West Virginia University; most of these scholarships must be awarded to students from our geographic
area or at least preference is given to such students. There are scholarships that can be used at any college for graduates
of Woodrow Wilson High School, Liberty High School, Independence, High School, Summers County High School, Mt. Hope High School,
and Fayetteville High School. There are a number of scholarships that are designated to be used by students pursuing a particular
field of study (health related, mining, engineering, nursing, and physical therapy). See the detailed lists available in high
school guidance offices and in BAF's annual report.
